Section 2: Discussion Director

In this section, we see for the first time the notes Miranda has received from the mystery person. In both notes, the person mentions that he or she is on a "difficult trip." What kind of trip do you think the person means? Where might he or she be going? Continuing with all things mysterious... Every time Miranda runs into Marcus, he seems to not remember her from previous encounters. Why do you think this happens? While at their job at Jimmy's, Colin and Miranda took a risk by looking inside the Flinstone bank. So far Jimmy seems not to have noticed. Do you think there will be consequences for their actions? If so, how do you think those consequences will be brought about? Lastly, Miranda is engrossed in only one book: A Wrinkle in Time. Even when a teacher tries to push another book, Miranda rejects it. Why do you think Miranda is so interested in this particular book? Do you think the book will be significant to the plot of the story? If so, how?

  1. Sorry all of the questions are together in one paragraph. I tried to separate them, but for some reason it wasn't working for me!

  2. I think that the trip the person is on has to do with time travel, since Miranda is so enamored with the Wrinkle in Time book, to me it would make sense. I think that the notes have been written in the future, and the travel is dropping them off in the past.

I was so nervous when Miranda and Colin looked inside the bank, but it's was like Pandora's Box, just sitting there, waiting to be opened. I hope Jimmy doesn't find out what happened because he just seems so creepy! If he does find out though, he will probably fire them, and throw the loaves of bread at them.

I do think a Wrinkle in Time is significant to the plot of the story. It has to do with time travel, and Marcus seems to be interested in time travel. I don't know why Miranda loves this book so much. It may have to do with the search for a father.

I can't wait to figure out what the notes mean!

  3. Like Ashley, I think the 'difficult trip" has something to do with time travel. We know that this book has something to do with time travel and I would imagine time travel would be a difficult trip. Also, the fact that Marcus and Miranda talked so much about time travel and A Wrinkle in time.

The fact that Marcus does not remember Miranda makes me think he has something to do with the time travel, but that is the only clue I have leading me to that inference.

I do think Jimmy will somehow find out they looked in the Flinstone bank. There is some reason for putting that bank into the story but I haven't figured it out yet. I think Jimmy will be upset when he finds out that they looked in the bank, also, the $2 bills must have some significance.

I definitely think A Wrinkle in Time is significant to the plot. This where the idea of time travel plays into the plot. I agree with Ashley that it may have to do with the search for her father (I still think he has something major to do with the story!)

  4. I agree with both Ashley and Eve that the "trip" is somehow a time travel trip. The notes seem to indicate that they are coming from a person in the future who has traveled back to the present. I do wonder though what is happening to the mystery person's mind during time travel, because he/she mentions that he/she must write the letters when his/her mind is sound.

I definitely agree with Eve that Marcus's foggy memory of previous encounters with Miranda make me think that he has somehow been traveling through time. Both his "bad memory" and his clear understanding of time travel make me think he has more going on than we've seen so far.

I do think that Jimmy will find out and fire the kids for touching his bank. Maybe Colin will take some of the money, and that will be how he finds out? Or maybe Annemarie will tell Julia, and she will tell Jimmy? Also, I agree with Eve that the $2 bills must have some significance. They just seem too random to be mentioned but not significant.

I think Miranda is so obsessed with A Wrinkle in Time because it offers an escape from anything negative that may be occurring in her own life. Also, I do think she connects with the main character because they both do not have their fathers in their lives.

  5. Like the rest of you ladies, I too believe that Miranda is going on a trip that has something to do with time travel. Perhaps this difficult trip is one that the writer of the letters is either taking to the future or the past.

I am not sure why Marcus does not remember Miranda when he runs into her, it is definitely mysterious and something that I want to discover as I continue reading. Since reading about time travel is something that they both enjoy, perhaps it has something to do with their fascination of the subject.

When an adult tells an adolescent not to do something, it makes them want to do it even more. The fact that Jimmy told them not to look in the bank makes them even more intrigued by it. It is hard to tell whether or not Jimmy will learn that they looked inside of the bank. I do not think that any of the children will tell him though.

Miranda is engrossed in the book because it is about time travel, and the series of letters that she is receiving is also about time travel. I have not read this book, but from what I have heard I definitely think that there could be a connection between A Wrinkle in Time and this novel.
